Starter Kit For Change Giveaway

By Dannie • Aug 4th, 2008 • Category: Giveaways

ChangePic Going green is a huge movement happening in our society. More and more individuals and families are reducing, reusing, and recycling. Last year I even made the initiative to make a change for the better. I changed all of my light bulbs over to CFL’s and recycle EVERYTHING. I never print anything, unless it is a must, and use my own bags to shop. I am even looking into reducing the junk mail that I receive and I am on paperless billing for all my monthly bills.

Granted there is a lot more that I can do, but I am making strides in learning how to grow my “green” and now you can too!

Change: A Starter Kit is a great first step in learning how to become more eco-friendly. Maybe you are already extremely green, but do you know someone that should be introduced to the movement? What a great way to help steer family, friends, and co-workers to a more healthier lifestyle by giving them a starter kit to help them on their journey. Can you say interesting birthday present?

  • An arbor day tree seedling

  8. I’m reusing vintage fabrics, by making tote bags, in different styles and making other items out of old clothes. And my scrapes I’m using for filler in old bean bag chairs. After they are all cut up, the fabric bits. I’m also making a head board for my bed out of an old door.

  13. Use cloth napkins instead of paper napkins or paper towels.

  14. Make your own furniture polish…

    1 whole lemon (juice)
    1/2 cup of olive oil

    Spray and enjoy!

  15. This is a beautiful tote!
We are making small changes to be more green: cloth diapers, cloth wipes, cloth napkins, no shaving cream (hubby uses shaving soap instead…less waste), less meat (I’m vegeatarian but my family isnt; I don’t buy/cook meat at home), locally grown veggies, and home made all-surface cleaner out of vinegar and water and lavender oil!

  17. We try to reuse and recycle almost everything. One thing is we refill the foam soap dispensers. It makes the soap last a lot longer, and you really don’t need all that soap when washing anyway.

  18. Use cloths bags instead of paper/plastic, recycle cans, bottles, newspaper, I make postcards out of boxes(soda,cereal,etc..), reuse junk mail envelopes by using a label, shop a thirft stores/garage sales

  19. I would love this!

We drive a Hybrid and I also use my own bags at the grocery store.

  20. Bring reusable (canvas, nylon, etc) bags with you not only to the farmer’s market but also to the grocery stores. Even stores where they bag the groceries for you are happy to use the the canvas bags. tinawittmer(at)yahoo(dot)com

  21. Well we bring our own bags (byob! hehe!), we cloth diaper, I breastfeed, and we recycle. We also have an HE (high efficiency) front load washer.

I put this on my twitter!

  22. I did the whole cloth diapering thing with my boys and I loved it! It was better for the environment and I was saving money in the long run. I also use compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) light bulbs in my house because they save me money by lasting longer and using less energy. My favorite website that I use all the time for reducing, reusing, and recycling is Freecycle. They help prevent things from going to the landfills everyday.

  23. wrap gifts in fabric

  24. I make my own cleaning solutions using baking soda or white distilled vinegar that I use on almost anything in the houes. For polish, I use olive oil. It is much better for the enviroment and the smell doen’t last as long as the chemical brands. Thanks for the chance to win!

  25. Some stores have boxes where you can recycle plastic bags. Collect yours (some will take bags from other stores as well) and make sure you bring them back next time you go shopping.

  26. I would LOVE to give this to my mom who gets overwhelmed by doing anything new or different. My first tip (this is a lot easier in urban environments with good bikeability or good public transporation) is to simply cut off going to your main grocery store if you can’t buy 75% of your groceries green, organic, and/or local. Shop farmer’s markets instead. Also, NEVER throw out clothes, books, or furniture - donate them. Even magazines can be used by schools and daycares for collage projects.

  27. The starter kit is a great idea! I would love to give this to friends and family (maybe for a holiday present) as a reminder to go green.

I love buying used items at garage sales or off craigslist as a way to reuse items. Oh, and we reuse items aroudn the house for projects for my children. For example, after Christmas, I took all the wrapping paper and reused them for art projects with the kids.

  28. Recycle everything you can by putting a small bin for recyclables into each room. Even if it’s just a cardboard box from the last package UPS dropped off. I never realized how much cardboard and paper I threw away until we started doing this. From junk mail to cardboard toilet tissue tubes. Cardboared boxes to medicine and paper tags I cut off new clothes.

  29. Composting is a really great thing to do. It gives you nice clean dirt and saves what you throw away.

  30. To really succeed in going green I need to listen to my kids! They are so on the bandwagon…I just need to jump on board with them.

  31. When I do get plastic bags at a store, I reuse them as small trash can liners. Our community waste company has given everyone the same size as the trash for recycling as well, no need to sort. I was amazed how much less garbage we have every week. I also try to hang on to plastic bottles, etc and recycle them at home rather than throw them at a gas station.
