Laundry Woes

Laundry is one of the most hated chores in any household. Pretty much one of the easiest chores since machines do most of the work, but what part do we truly hate? Folding and putting a way. I always say, “If I could just wash and dry, I would be a happy camper.”
As I was preparing the ‘laundry list’ of items for Simple Home Basics, I ran across a list of ideas offered at iVillage and one thought offered by professional organizer, Lynne Tapper from West Hartford, CT, suggested that reader’s consolidate chores within their household to save time. In essence, take one day and make that laundry day. This helps to alleviate wasting time throughout the week. A good tip, but one I could never do - again.
I have tried the whole day laundry routine, but can never seem to complete all of the laundry and half way through, I am so overwhelmed by laundry, I just don’t want to continue. My current laundry schedule is to do laundry every other night, no less than two loads.
Of course each person will be different. Some people could never imagine doing an all-laundry day and others want to get it over with to free up the week.
Some other laundry tips:
Dreaded stains on our children’s clothing and if you are like me, your shirts too, can be a pain in the neck. I am always forgetting to pre-treat stains and will inevitably have to re-wash washed clothing. What am I doing to remember? Placing magnets on a Shout® Ultra Gel bottle so it will stick to my machine. As clothes go in the basket, the gel is right there in front of my face.
Stop double drying. If you dryer does not perform up to par, regularly cleaning your dryer lint filter after every use and you may also need to clean the filter more thoroughly every three to six months. Using dryer sheets will cause a film to build up on your screen. Washing your filter with warm, soapy water and a toothbrush and rinse clean. This will help air flow and allow lint cling to the filter.
Time to put it all away. My clothes are put away as soon as I am finished folding or hanging that particular load. Why? Because I do laundry in my room, so I am right there. But, instead of wasting time trudging across the house to put away my children’s clothing, I place their folded clothing in a basket for each of them. Then I use that time to work on articles. After all of the laundry is done for that day, I take the baskets one time and put the clothes away. Even better idea - if the kids are home, I have them take their basket and put their own clothes away.
