Junk Drawer Organization

By Dannie • Feb 1st, 2008 • Category: Simply Organized

Everyone has one, those hideous drawers tucked away in the far corner of our kitchen that everything and anything gets shoved in to. The drawer is so packed; we sometimes wonder how we will ever fit anymore in. Well the infamous junk drawer can get a makeover with a little time spent on organizing the junk we have placed in it with the help of a few nifty organizers.

Here are a few pictures of some easy organizers that won’t cost an arm and a leg, but will help you out tremendously keeping like items together in easy to find nooks of the drawer.

No, I am not saying to rush out and buy name-brand plastic storage bags, but I needed a picture to get the point across that a generic plastic bag will work just as fine, if not better than the storage containers you see above. Remember, organizing like items is the priority, not the look of the drawer. No one will see the inside of the drawer except for you and family, right?

Beginning is the hard part. Find a clear space on the floor, take the drawer and dump it completely out. From that point encourage your kids to help you unclutter. Organize pens and pencils, batteries, manuals, odds and ends of things you have no clue about, buttons, and so on - you get the picture. Then have everyone take a plastic storage bag and place their stuff inside.  Now if the item is obvious and doesn’t belong - hair clips, hair brushes, etc - then put those items where they belong. This also includes trash. You don’t need all of those scrap papers that have no more writing room - recycle if available or throw them away.

Now with items secured in the plastic storage bags, you can either label each bag with the contents or since your bags are clear, just go for the visual clarification. Place the drawer back in its proper location and then begin to add your plastic storage bags to the drawer. A completely easy, painless task is now done and you can easily find things that you might have overlooked before.

Now, if you choose to purchase plastic organizers that will fit within your drawer, here is a link to Space Savers, a site that has every type of organizer imaginable. Happy organizing!
